Incandescent and halogen lamps will disappear

Inefficient lamps banned in the EU

Since 1 September 2012, incandescent lamps may no longer be marketed in Europe. The original plan was to also introduce this ban for halogen lamps on September 1, 2016. However, this ban has been postponed until 2018.

Incandescent and halogen lamps will disappear

The EU sets stricter requirements for the energy efficiency of lamps. Incandescent lamps and (some) halogen lamps do not meet these requirements. Since September 2012, incandescent lamps are no longer allowed to be placed on the market. Stocks from wholesalers and stores may still be sold, but eventually the light bulbs will disappear from the store altogether. As of September 2018, the same applies to (most) halogen lamps.

Which lamps disappear (immediately)?

Matt halogen lamps with a threaded socket (E14 and E27) have been banned for several years now. From September 2018, this will also apply to the clear halogen lamps with a threaded socket. Halogen lamps with other fittings will remain permitted for the time being until sufficient and affordable energy-efficient alternatives are available on the market. Immediately Prohibited are:

GU10 spots

GU5.3 spotlights (MR11, MR16, MR20)

EcoClassic reflectors (R39, NR50, NR63, R80)

PAR(par16, par20, par30, par38, par56)

Savings: 40 billion kWh

The European Commission has calculated that the ban will save more than 40 billion kWh by 2020.
